As a former foster kid, Ben Coffin tries not to get to close to anyone; too many people in his life have left him. While Ben spends most of his time with his science fiction books, he can't turn away when Flip, a scruffy abandoned mutt, needs his help. Ben's life changes when he meets Halley, or Rainbow Girl as he calls her. As Ben's life starts to come apart, he realizes that sometimes you have to risk your heart to truly live.
